Artificial Illumination

Use the natural light as much as possible

Never leave the lights on in unoccupied rooms

Changing an incandescent bulb for a Led one can save the planet from half tone of CO2 a year

Use sensors that detect movement in rooms like the pantry, the winery or the hallway

Get use to the night rate, and change your habits for saving electricity

Keep the fluorescent bulb clean to avoid bad reflexion because of the dust

Use light regulators to adapt to the real needs of light on the rooms

Heating & Air Conditioning

Connect the air conditioning at a minimum temperature of 25ºc

Turn off the air conditioning when you are not in the room

Do not feel hot in winter, adjust the temperature so that you are comfortable with winter clothes

If reforming the house, install thermal insulator in the walls

Install double-glass in the windows

If you live in a place that receives a lot of radiation, put awning

Use the stairs instead of the elevator when it is less than two floors

Avoid electricity consumption from devices in stand-by

Use low consumption bulbs

Close the gas key during the night or when going on a vacation

Choose highly efficient appliances (A++) minimum A

Keep the backside of the fridge clean and ventilated

Do not keep open the fridge more time than the needed

Wait until the food cools before keeping it in the fridge

Do not keep the fridge below 5ºc and the freezer below -15ºc

Defrost the freezer if there is 5-7mm of ice covering the walls

When defrosting food, move it from the freezer to the fridge

When using the washing machine, the ideal temperature is 40-60ºc

Cook with subdivided pans than can cook meat, fish and legumes at the same time

The pan base must be bigger than the fire and the casseroles must be covered to save up to 20% of the energy

Turn off or lower down the ceramic hob before finishing the cooking

Using the pressure cooker saves half of the energy

Everytime we open the oven, a 20% of the heat is lost

Keep the toaster clean and in good conditions, it will last longer and save energy

Place the food in the fridge so that the air can circulate through them

Iron first the clothes that need less heat, and continue with the ones that need more, instead of waiting for the iron to warm up

If possible, use solar energy to dry the clothes

Use the washing machine when it is full and with the eco programs

Personal Computer

Choose a saving energy mode in the settings of your computer. Turn off the light of the screen after a few minutes not using it. Shut down the computer when it is not being used in 30min

Turn off the computer when you are not going to use it

Avoid using screen savers, the sometimes require effort from the graphic card of your computer

Low down the brightness of the screen. Not only you will save 50% of the energy, but your eyes will rest

Close de app you are not using. It will lower the consumption and save energy

Keep the hard disk clean and tidy. Use programs like CCleaner

Defragment the hard disk eventually to improve the performance of your computer

Have the sound in a reasonable volume, too high will waste energy

Use public transport when possible

Walk instead of use the car for short displacements

If possible, share the car with work partners

Start the engine without a gear, move after the vehicle has turned on

Use the first gear as least as possible

Drive with the longest time with the larger gear possible

The engine with the least revolutions possible

Avoid unnecessary changes of speed, braking or accelerating

When decelerating reduce the gear the latest possible, brake smoothly

If possible, stop the car without reducing the gear

If you stop the car for longer than a minute, turn off the engine

Use air conditioning reasonably, 24 ºc in the interior

Don´t drive with the car windows wide open, it increases the use of petrol

Avoid unnecessary weight

Checa the tyres pressure, a wrong pressure can increase a 3% the petrol consumption

Park in the shadow, it avoids fuel evaporation and maintains the interior cooler

Share the car with people doing the same journey

Fill the car with fuel in the early morning or in the night, the cooler the temperature the least evaporation

Fill the deposit when it is half way, there is least air and less evaporation

The best days to fill the deposit are Tuesday and Wednesday

Clean your hands with cold water

Change the bath for shower

Consider installing thermal solar modules for hot water

Nowadays significant time and money gets invested in cleantech solutions (electrical cars, wind generators, biofuels, etc.) that contribute significantly towards reducing CO2 emissions. At Sustainable Reference (the makers of SustPro), we believe, however, that if we collectively share all those sustainable solutions that are already available and can be applied in our projects, jobs, companies, cities, homes and lifestyles, that we´ll gain a much bigger benefit than what´s gained by any individual technology by itself. Sharing and encouraging solutions and good practices will help make a better world for us and for the generations to come. Thank you for visiting SustPro.
